Travel by Type / Do's & Don'ts

In Turkey, in crowded buses (Dolmus), the way to pay for your ticket is to pass the money from passenger to passenger towards the bus driver.

Dolmus buses are found all over Turkey. The Dolmus is a minibus collecting people, much cheaper than a taxi. Dolmus can be yellow, beige or light blue. They have a « dolmus » sign on the roof. They are mostly used by local people but it is worth trying this great mode of transportation.

The Dolmus' destination is shown behind the windscreen. Raise your hand to the Dolmus driver to show that you would like to hop on. Once in, people behind you may pass you some money. You should pass this money on to the person in front of you, who will give it to the person in front of them and so on until it reaches the driver. The driver will hand back the change via the same route.

One other thing: there is no regular Dolmus stop. You have to tell the driver to stop.

Only Turkish liras are accepted on Dolmus.

Enjoy the ride !
